It is normal to experience a loss of tissue elasticity and volume as we age. As the skin becomes lax, deep creases and facial lines (static wrinkles) will appear. Fatty deposits under the eyes and along the cheeks may start to diminish, giving the face a hollow appearance. These changes can give the face an exhausted, unhappy, and unhealthy look. Moreover, the early signs of aging can add unneeded years onto the appearance. Sun damage, smoking, illness, weight fluctuations, and genetics will further intensify these issues.

Juvederm XC is a dermal filler, designed to treat static wrinkles, facial folds, and the loss of volume that occurs with age. Comprised of Hyaluronic Acid, a naturally occurring substance that provides structure to healthy skin, Juvederm will plump tissues and bind with the body’s existing collagen stores. Facial symmetry and volume under the eyes, along the cheeks, and across the jawline can be restored. The smooth gel formula ensures natural looking results, which can last for up to one year.

Options in Juvederm Treatment

Juvederm comes in three unique formulas; each designed to meet a wide variety of patient needs. A variation in viscosity (thickness) will allow the specific filler to successfully treat fine lines, deep creases, or replenish facial volume.

  • Juvederm Ultra XC: The ‘light’ version of Juvederm, Ultra XC works well to eliminate fine facial lines.
  • Juvederm Ultra Plus XC: As the ‘medium-duty’ member of the Juvederm family, Ultra Plus XC is perfect for deeper folds and mild improvements in facial volume.
  • Juvederm Voluma XC: The ‘heavy duty’ Juvederm, Voluma is designed for restoring tissue volume and shape. Voluma is the newest part of the Juvederm line, approved by the FDA in 2013

Juvederm can effectively eliminate static wrinkles, providing excellent results when used on its own. When the filler is paired with Botox Cosmetic, used to treat dynamic wrinkles (caused by repetitive muscle movements), patients can see optimal facial rejuvenation. Ask your provider about the other noninvasive treatments available to compliment your Juvederm treatment.

The Ideal Juvederm Candidate

Anyone who is unhappy with the early signs of aging may make a great candidate for Juvederm. The treatments can benefit both men and women; it is safe for any skin type or ethnicity. The ideal patient will be in overall good health, understand the Juvederm process, and hold reasonable expectations for their results. Those with a history of an allergic reaction to dermal filler injections should not undergo a Juvederm treatment. A consultation appointment will be held before beginning Juvederm injections, to determine if Juvederm will meet each patient’s unique needs.

The Juvederm Consultation

Prior to beginning a Juvederm treatment, a brief consultation appointment will be scheduled with one of our senior Nurses or Doctors. This will provide time for a full assessment of your skin’s health and your medical history. Here, the Juvederm process will be explained, as well as any other potential options for skin rejuvenation. If Juvederm is determined to be the right noninvasive product for you, an individualized treatment plan will be created.

The Juvederm Procedure

The Juvederm procedure will take less than half an hour complete. Juvederm XC contains Lidocaine, an anesthetic, which keeps discomfort to a minimum. For added comfort, patients may request a topical numbing cream or local anesthetic. Once the consultation and anesthesia have been completed, the wrinkle-reducing filler will be applied with a very small needle, just above the underlying muscle and bone tissue.

We uses several techniques to administer Juvederm, depending on the patient’s desired results. These include traditional injections, linear threading (a single thread placed under the skin fold), or serial punctures (a number of small deposits under the tissue). The injections themselves will take only a few minutes. Patients are then free to resume their normal activities.

Results from Juvederm

The benefits from Juvederm injections can be seen immediately. Lines and folds will be eliminated, the skin will be lifted, and healthy volume restored. Over the next two to three weeks, as any residual swelling or redness resolves, the results from Juvederm will continue to improve. The Hyaluronic Acid contained in Juvederm will also encourage the body’s natural production of collagen, giving the face further improvement.

The results from Juvederm can last from six to twelve months, sometimes longer. This will depend on the treatment area, the extent of correction, and the type of Juvederm used. After this time, a repeat treatment can be used to maintain the results.

Potential Complications from Juvederm

When performed by a skilled, experienced provider, Juvederm is both safe and effective. Patients who choose a reputable practice, such as Bodyvision Aesthetics, reduce the chance for any serious complications to occur.

Side effects from Juvederm are normally mild, but can include swelling, redness, and bruising at the injection sites. These will diminish quickly, usually over the first 24 to 48 hours. On the rare occasion, more serious issues such as facial asymmetry, infection, or an allergic reaction can occur.

Juvederm Q&A

What is Juvederm XC?

Juvederm XC is a smooth gel facial filler. Comprised of Hyaluronic Acid, Juvederm can be used to instantly eliminate static wrinkles and add facial volume.

How does Juvederm XC work?

Juvederm contains Hyaluronic Acid (HA), a vital building block of healthy, hydrated skin. As you age, HA naturally decreases, causing the skin to loose structure and volume. Juvederm replaces the HA, adding immediate fullness under the skin, and restoring a youthful appearance.

What is the difference between static and dynamic wrinkles?

Juvederm is used to replace lost facial volume and improve the look of static wrinkles: those that occur due to a loss of skin elasticity. Dynamic wrinkles, caused by repetitive muscle movements, are best treated with Botox Cosmetic, Dysport, or Xeomin.

What areas can be treated with Juvederm?

Juvederm can eliminate Nasolabial Folds (from nose to edges of the mouth) and Marionette Lines (at the corners of the mouth), as well as add volume to the cheeks and jawline.

Who is the ideal candidate for a treatment with Juvederm?

Anyone who is looking to improve the wrinkles, fine lines, and loss of facial volume that occur with aging may make a great candidate for Juvederm. Juvederm is safe for all skin types and ethnicities. Ideal patients will be in overall good health and will hold reasonable expectations for their results.

Are Juvederm injections painful?

Juvederm XC contains Lidocaine, assuring the injections are not painful. However, anesthetic choices are available to increase patient comfort during the treatment.

Will anesthesia be used before my Juvederm treatment?

For added patient comfort, we may utilize a topical or local anesthetic prior to administering the Juvederm injections.

How is a Juvederm procedure performed?

Juvederm is injected directly into the target area, using a very small needle. If an additional anesthetic will be used, this will be applied about 20-30 minutes prior to treatment.

How long is a Juvederm treatment?

A Juvederm session will normally take less than 30 minutes to complete.

What can I expect from the recovery period, after Juvederm injections?

After a Juvederm procedure, mild redness, swelling, and bruising may occur at the injection site. These will diminish quickly, however. There is no downtime needed after Juvederm injections, so patients can immediately resume their daily activities.

When can I expect to see results from my Juvederm injections?

You will see the results from a Juvederm treatment immediately. The benefits of the injections will continue to improve over the next two to three weeks, as any swelling or bruising subsides.

When can I return to work, after my Juvederm injections?

There is no downtime necessary after Juvederm injections. Patients are able to return to work or school the same afternoon.

How long will the results from Juvederm injections last?

Juvederm is the longest lasting Hyaluronic Acid filler on the market today. The results from one treatment can last from six to twenty-four months, or potentially longer. This will depend on the area being treated and the level of correction needed.

What are the possible risks from Juvederm XC?

Juvederm injections are considered extremely safe. Side effects can include minor bruising, redness, and swelling at the injection site. On the rare occasion, an allergic reaction to the bacterial proteins in Juvederm may occur.

Who should NOT receive Juvederm injections?

Patients with a history of allergic reactions to bacterial proteins, or Hyaluronic Acid fillers, should not have Juvederm injections. Those with poor health or certain medical conditions should also refrain from the treatment. These factors will be discussed in depth at your consultation appointment.

Is Juvederm affordable?

Juvederm is reasonably priced and can be afforded on any budget. The results from Juvederm can last up to a year, or longer, making the injectable one of the most cost-effective aesthetic treatments available today.

BodyVision Aesthetics, LLC

Aftercare for Juvederm

Immediately after the treatment, there may be slight redness, swelling, tenderness, and an itching sensation in the treated area. This is a normal result of the injection. The inconvenience is temporary and generally disappears in a day or two. If the inconvenience continues or if other reactions occur, please contact the office.

The initial swelling after the lip treatments may last longer than two days. Some patients experience swelling for about a week and the lips can look somewhat uneven during this time. This means that the result directly after the treatment should not be seen as the final result.

Avoid touching the area for 3-4 hours following the injection. After that, light make-up can be applied and the area be gently washed with soap and water. Until the initial swelling and redness have resolved, do not expose the treated area to intense heat (i.e., sunbathing, or tanning bed) or extreme cold.

If you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another eruption of cold sores. If you are using aspirin or any similar medication, be aware that these may increase the bruising and bleeding at the injection site. You may take Tylenol for discomfort. Please avoid alcohol and exercise for 12 hours following the injection. You may gently apply ice to the treated area for 10 minutes an hour for the first 3 hours following the injection. Apply lightly, do not use too much pressure. Finally, Juvaderm gradually dissolves. The correction does not last forever. Many people choose to be treated again within 4-6 months of the original treatment. If taking Arnica, continue for two more days.

After 3 hours, when Lidocaine wears off, if you feel any excessive heat or burning in or close to the injected areas, please call Mary McMillin, RN immediately, 602-999-5847. Please feel free to call with any questions you may have.
